Historic Killefer School Revived as Community Space in Orange
A piece of Orange’s architectural history has found new life as the historic Killefer School has been carefully restored and reimagined as a modern community gathering space.
Originally built in the early 20th century, the Mission Revival–style building has long been a recognizable landmark in the city. Rather than replacing the structure, designers chose to preserve its character — restoring original details while adapting the interior for contemporary use. The project highlights Orange’s ongoing effort to balance growth with preservation, keeping historic buildings active rather than forgotten.
The renovation maintained the building’s classic exterior features, including its stucco walls, arched forms, and traditional proportions, while introducing updated interiors that support educational programs, meetings, and community events. By blending historic architecture with functional spaces, the site now serves as a place for learning and gathering once again.
For residents, the restored building reflects a broader trend within Orange: honoring the past while making spaces useful for today. Instead of becoming a relic, Killefer School continues its original purpose — bringing people together — just in a new way.
Projects like this help preserve the unique character of the city, showing how thoughtful restoration can protect heritage while still supporting modern community life in Orange.
