Chicago’s Iconic Jim’s Original Expands West, Opening First California Location in Orange
Orange County food lovers are about to get a taste of Chicago history. Jim’s Original, a legendary hot dog stand that’s been serving Chicago’s South Side since 1939, has announced it will open its first-ever California location in the City of Orange. Known for its famed Maxwell Street Polish sausages, char-grilled hot dogs, and no-frills, late-night appeal, Jim’s is bringing its authentic Chicago flavors to a new audience while keeping its roots intact.
The new location, set for 214 N. Tustin Street, will span 1,800 square feet and feature both drive-through and dine-in service. While the menu will stay true to its Chicago classics—signature Polish sausage smothered in grilled onions, hearty hot dogs, and house-made sausages—there’s also speculation that California-inspired items may be added to cater to West Coast tastes. For many Chicago transplants living in Southern California, the expansion is being celebrated as a nostalgic piece of home finally making its way west.
Jim’s Original has built its reputation on simplicity and flavor. Its founder, “Jimmy” Stefanovic, became a staple of Chicago’s Maxwell Street Market, serving late-night crowds, workers, and students with affordable, hearty meals. Over the decades, the stand became a symbol of Chicago’s food culture, one where quality ingredients and community connection mattered most. Now, Orange County will get the chance to experience that same history and flavor firsthand.
For the City of Orange, the arrival of Jim’s Original is also an economic and cultural boost, adding another unique dining destination to its growing food scene. Residents and visitors alike will soon be able to decide if the iconic Chicago staple can win just as much love on the West Coast as it has for decades in the Midwest.
